My next "appearance" will be on talk radio, KUIK 1360 AM, "The Voice of Washington County." This interview will not be about my books, however. We will be speaking about speaking. More precisely, I will be telling people about an upcoming workshop on humor. That workshop will be hosted by Daylighters, a local Toastmasters International club, on 8/27/2014, 6:40 - 8:00 a.m., St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, 12405 SW Butner Rd, Beaverton, OR. Refreshments will be provided, and the entire thing…

At one of the writer's workshops I attended recently one of the attendees offered this advice: "Always open with dialogue." My personal experiences tell me it's always a bad idea to use "always." lol But I gave this a try. Let me know what you think of the following as the first words in an opening chapter. (more…)

I was reminded at Toastmasters this week of a familiar saying: The best way to have good friends is to first be a good friend. Hug, thank, or otherwise express appreciate for at least one of the friends in your life today.

I have been working furiously to get book 2 in the Arthe Awakening series out in June, as opposed to the originally scheduled release date of November, 2014. The writing and the editing is almost complete. There will need to be a few more book design changes, and the cover design is not yet done. The book will be out in early July at the latest, still four months ahead of the original date. Why? Because the fans that offered…

Even my dentist loved the book! Yesterday he talked about the characters, his favorites, and looking forward to the new book. He said I was "very imaginative," and my characters were "interesting and well developed." The release of the second book in the series, There Used to be Magic, has been pulled in to June instead of November BECAUSE OF ALL THE FAN SUPPORT! Thank you so much for your encouragement. I love the fact that you are all enjoying…

OK friends and fans . . . Gamestorm 16 is even more exciting and well attended than Gamestorm 15 last year! It is great fun to help in the Game Lab, probably play testing 70-80 new games this year! I found a few new ones I want to pick up, and the reviews on the couple we have rolled out are excellent! There's still time to attend (if you're local, Pacific NW), as the convention runs through 6 pm Sunday!

For anyone watching this page, my apologies for having entered the wrong dates for Gamestorm. I have corrected them now, reflecting the true dates of March 20-23. Gamestorm is being held at the Hilton in Vancouver, WA.\ I will have copies of my book there, and bookmarks, but I am not attending primarily as an author. I am attending primarily as a game designer, along with my design partner, Hugh Wright. We will be officially play testing one of our…

Jan's Paperbacks, used book store in Aloha, OR, is AWESOME! They truly support local authors. C.J. Maillup and I had a book signing there today, and it was a good event. A lot of customers stopped by, we chatted, C.J. and I each sold and signed some books (his family is great). Jan's not only advertised, provided the venue, including tables and chairs; they also put out cookies, and gave us water. On top of all that, they discounted our…

This morning I attended the University Club Toastmasters as a guest speaker, and volunteered to serve as general evaluator. The club is warm and welcoming. Anyone looking for a great way to start their Thursday morning in downtown Portland should consider attending/joining. I wasn't pleased with many aspects of my speech this morning, and I flailed about a bit as general evaluator, unused to their particular protocols. In spite of that I enjoyed myself, and they were encouraging. I did…
